Literature Text

when i think back on the story of the little mermaid it makes me remember that one time i stabbed myself in the chest with my rainbow sword because your friends said it would make me real and when i twisted the blade in i swore that i grew legs as long as yours and my skin formed its own fishscale sheen like the rainbow that shines in a puddle of oil in the sun and i thought my mind expanded into its own rose-scented universe where i named all the foreign satellites after your enemies but since the day we met dry ice would burn in my joints and when you weren’t looking my long shiny legs would bleed enough blood to water the graveyard down the street and one time when we went to sea your friends said i was too loud, my voice was too coarse and you agreed so i went home and slit my throat with the knife you gave me on graduation day and now the ocean is calling for me to sing again but the more i think about you keeping my old rainbow sword i gave you the more my coral sheen  my color  my fishscales fall off and i am fading into the sea foam you drink from other girls every morning and soon the universe will collapse on us all and all i am saying is i wish i have never met any of you
"...Then your tail will divide and shrink until it becomes what the people on earth call a pair of shapely legs. But it will hurt; it will feel as if a sharp sword slashed through you. Everyone who sees you will say that you are the most graceful human being they have ever laid eyes on, for you will keep your gliding movement and no dancer will be able to tread as lightly as you. But every step you take will feel as if you were treading upon knife blades so sharp that blood must flow. [...] are you willing to suffer all this?"

I don't really feel like writing a really long Artist's Comments right now, so...

A poem I wrote for Poetry Workshops this semester, just last week. I'm actually quite proud of it.
This is the first draft; may or may not post the edited version when I get around to it.

Being an Andersen protagonist is suffering.
